Ben Nevis

Two people in orange jackets sitting on rocks near a tent in a snowy mountain landscape with steep snow-covered peaks and a clear blue sky.

This route follows the the most popular way to the summit of Ben Nevis – the highest point in the UK at 1,345m. Starting in Glen Nevis, the path climbs steadily through rocky terrain, gaining 1,300m over 8km (5 miles). The full round trip is about 16km (10 miles) and usually takes 7–9 hours.

This is a challenging but achievable walk for most people with good fitness and determination. The ascent is hard work, and the descent can be just as demanding on tired legs, but the reward is incredible views, the satisfaction of standing on the UK’s highest mountain, and a real sense of achievement.

Ben Nevis is a mountain with a rich history and unique character. Once an ancient volcano, its summit plateau is the collapsed dome of a massive eruption hundreds of millions of years ago. It has also played an important role in Scottish mountaineering history and is home to rare alpine plants that thrive in its harsh conditions.

The weather here is notoriously changeable, with the summit often 8–10°C colder than the base and snow lingering well into summer. Even on a fine day, warm clothing, waterproofs, sturdy boots, food, and plenty of water are essential. With the right preparation and guidance, this walk offers a true mountain experience and an unforgettable day in the Highlands.
